Jamie McGrath joins Wigan as Jeff Hendrick closes in on QPR

Jamie McGrath has sealed a permanent move to League One high flyers Wigan Athletic from St Mirren.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder signed a two-and-a-half year deal as he moves into English football for the first time.

McGrath was heavily linked with a switch to Hibs on Sunday - and Aberdeen before that - but the Meathman rejected the Edinburgh club.

And that left the door open for Wigan - second in the table - to make their move having held a long standing interest in the 25-year-old.

McGrath had been a revelation in the SPL since joining from Dundalk two years ago but the Buddies were always struggling to keep hold of him.

And their Waterford born boss, Jim Goodwin, was resigned to losing McGrath once their near €400,000 valuation of the Irish international was met.

But Goodwin had time to replace McGrath by landing Hibs midfielder Alex Gogic on loan until the end of the season.

Ireland team-mate Jeff Hendrick was finalising a move to QPR and that switch is expected to go through.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder agreed a loan deal from Newcastle United until the end of the season.

Hendrick, who turned 30 yesterday, had been in talks with Middlesbrough over the weekend before that deal fell through.

But Ciaran Clark, his fellow Irish international and Newcastle team-mate, is staying at the Magpies having also been linked with Boro.

Aiden O’Brien - who has five Ireland caps since breaking through under Martin O’Neill in 2018 - has joined Portsmouth on loan from Sunderland until the end of the season.

Pompey boss Danny Cowley said: “Aiden brings us many different qualities and can play across the forward line, making penetrative runs.

“He looks after the ball well and links the play, while he can also drive forward and is always a goal threat.”

But Cardiff City saw a loan bid for fellow Irish international Sean Maguire rejected by Preston North End.

Maguire has over 150 appearances for PNE since joining from Cork City in 2017 but has started just once since Ryan Lowe took over as manager in December.

Scunthorpe United signed ex-Cork City defender Ryan Delaney on loan from Morecambe.
