Fans have reacted to Jamie Lee Curtis giving her Oscar 'they/them' pronouns.

Jamie Lee Curtis won her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at the weekend for her role in the hit film Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. She announced that she would be using gender neutral pronouns for the award in support of her transgender daughter.

Speaking about her Oscar, Jamie Lee Curtis said: "In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m having [my Oscar] be a they/them. I’m just gonna call them they/them and they are doing great. They’re settling in.

"In my life, I never thought in a million years that I would have these couple days, and I’m very moved by the whole thing." Speaking about making Oscars categories gender neutral, she added: "How do you include everyone when there are binary choices.

“As the mother of a trans daughter I get that and yet, to de-gender the category – I’m concerned will diminish the opportunity for more women, which is also something that I have been working hard to try and promote.”

The celebrity news account Pop Base tweeted about her announcement, and it had mixed reactions. Some thought it was a sweet gesture, as one person said: "aww that's cute", and another said: "wait that's kinda cute". A third said: "Found out that Jamie Lee Curtis gave her Oscar they/them pronouns in honor of her trans daughter and I promptly burst into tears because of how sweet that is and how much I love that energy in the world".

Others appreciated the gesture, although they thought it was a little odd or random and not necessarily helpful. One person said: "this is a bit weird but still very sweet. good on Jamie for being supportive.", another said: "cute, but it's literally a statue" and a third said: "that's so random but I love her she's such a great and supportive mom".

Some people felt it was a useless gesture, calling it 'performative activism' or arguing that was contributing towards people viewing gender non-conforming people as being trivial or flippant. One person said: "It’s literally a statue. An inanimate object. This is why the right doesn’t take us seriously.", another said: "how impactful. What a Change agent" with a gif saying 'this is boring' and a third said: "performative activism at it's finest".
