Jamie Lee Curtis' $30m Halloween Ends film earns $13m less than predicted on first weekend

Jamie Lee Curtis' Halloween Ends failed to live up to expectations during its opening weekend, earning $13million less than it was projected.

The slasher film, which is the last-ever instalment in the Halloween franchise, takes place four years after Laurie Strode's (Jamie Lee Curtis) last encounter with masked killer Michael Myers, who has been stalking her since she was a teenager.

While the original Halloween movie, directed by John Carpenter in 1978, is well-loved by horror fans, it seems the latest spin-off has fallen short of the mark.

Halloween Ends' opening weekend tally was just $41.2 million, despite predictions it would hit the $55 million mark.

On Saturday, the spinoff brought in $13 million, falling 36% from $20.4 million on Friday, according to Deadline.

The latest instalment in the horror franchise trailed behind its 2021 predecessor, Halloween Kills, which pulled in $49.4 million during its opening weekend.

Director David Gordon Green's new film received a Rotten Tomatoes score of 39%, with an audience rating of 57%.

Halloween Ends, however, is reportedly the "most watched film or series ever" in a two-day period on Peacock, the publication noted.

Despite its low box office debut, the slasher cost $30 million to make, meaning it's made more than $10million in profit. It has also been suggested that the film's low-earning first weekend may be due to its day-and-date release.

This means the film was available on streaming services at the same time as it was released in cinemas.

The original Halloween movie became iconic for its introduction of recognisable characters Michael Myers and Laurie Strode.

The feature film was followed up by a number of sequels, several of which saw Jamie Lee taking up her starring role.

A remake of the original movie, directed by Rob Zombie, premiered in 2007 and was followed up by a sequel two years later.

The first of the new trilogy of rebooted Halloween movies was released in 2018. The film, which featured the involvement of both Jamie Lee and John Carpenter, was met with praise from fans and critics alike.
