Jamie Jones-Buchanan put himself through it during his rugby league career.
The Leeds Rhinos assistant coach enjoyed a stellar career in which he made well over 400 career appearances and won numerous trophies.
But it didn't come without having to pay a price. JJB, who is now a regular pundit on Sky Sports' coverage, endured several major injuries and put his body through hell in the process.
One of the penalties from his career is his unmistakable voice, something he explained was a consequence of one of his many injuries.
In the pre-match build-up of Hull KR's game with Castleford Tigers, Jones-Buchanan was discussing injuries and specifically a facial injury he suffered during his career.
As a result, he explained that he had recently undergone an operation in which his face was 'sawn in half'.
Making light of a seemingly terrifying procedure, Jones-Buchanan left viewers howling as he added: "That's why I sound and look like I've got my car keys in my mouth!"
The comment quickly found its way on to social media, with league legend Paul Sculthorpe even joining the conversation.
"Gotta love JJB," he tweeted "Car keys!!!!…what a top guy!"
His former Leeds teammate Barrie McDermott added: "Classic Jonesy."
