Jamie Dornan shows Jimmy Kimmel how to make Tayto crisp sandwich during interview

Jamie Dornan has been flying the flag for his home country by showing an American audience how to make a Tayto crisp sandwich live on air.

The Holywood-born actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote the American release of his new show, The Tourist .

In the chat show, the actor talked about the success of Kenneth Branagh's Belfast , as well as taking us back to his early modelling days.

He also gave Kimmel and his audience a crash course in some authentic Irish traits, including not saying 'St Patty's Day' when you mean St Paddy's Day.

Following this, the 39-year old actor was tasked with making a Tayto crisp sandwich – a 'Tayto smashie' as he called it – live on air.

Kimmel tells Dornan that he wants to make sure he celebrates St Patrick's Day in the "traditional way", so he brings on a platter of Tayto cheese and onion crisps, with ingredients for making a sandwich.

Seeing the crisps, Dornan says: "This is as good a set up...This makes me very happy."

He then talks Kimmel through what he's making, saying: "What we're making here is called a Tayto smashie. Ideally you find the cheapest white bread you can find. There used to be a bread back home called 'Mighty White' which was like sugary death.

"You go heavy on the mayo – both sides – you don't muck around with light mayonnaise. Then that's regular ham. The cheaper ham the better. It all comes from the same animal. You go heavy on there. Five or six slices."

He also talks through the magic ingredient – Tayto crisps.

"You get Tayto cheese and onion, which is a company in the north of Ireland where I'm from. Their cheese and onion are the best crisps they do. You get the entire packet on there."

As he crunches the sandwich down, he adds: "This is the most exciting thing that'll happen in your day, year, your life, the crunch."

The sandwich itself is met with approval, with Kimmel saying: "I thought it was going to be good, it's about six times more delicious than I imagined."
