Jamie Carragher urges Tottenham to sack Cristian Stellini as he makes ‘Conte’s mate’ jibe

Jamie Carragher has urged Tottenham to sack Cristian Stellini following the dismal defeat to Newcastle.

In a barely believable opening 20 minutes at St James’ Park, Spurs conceded five goals as they switched to a back-four system, both Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak netting braces and Joelinton also getting on the scoresheet.

Davinson Sanchez was then brought on as Tottenham switched to the more familiar back five, looking to avoid further embarrassment after an astonishingly bad start to the match.

It worked to a degree, with Harry Kane scoring a consolation after the break and no further Newcastle goals conceded until Callum Wilson struck shortly after coming on, giving the Magpies a 6-1 victory to consolidate their top-four hopes and surely end Tottenham’s.

Since Stellini took charge of the club on an interim basis, following the sacking of Antonio Conte during the international break, Spurs have won just one of four games, and they were fortunate to pick up those three points against Brighton.

Conte’s former assistant has not had any form of positive impact on Spurs’ fortunes, and it remains to be seen who Daniel Levy appoints as a new permanent manager this summer, with Mauricio Pochettino appearing an increasingly strong candidate to take the Chelsea job.

However, Carragher took to social media to claim Spurs must take more immediate action and not wait until the summer to finally replace Conte.

“Tottenham are a disgrace!” Carragher tweeted.

“How have they gone to a back four for the first time this season, with [Pedro] Porro a full back that can’t defend and [Ivan] Perisic who is a winger.

“Get a proper manager in right now, not Conte’s mate.”
