Jamie Carragher urges Antonio Conte to make three huge transfers amid Tottenham challenge

Former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher has urged Tottenham to make three huge signings to boost their chances in the Premier League. It comes after a difficult run of form for Spurs, with questions arriving over Antonio Conte's style, despite his achievements so far.

The Lilywhites sit fourth in the league after 14 games played, with their most recent match ending in a 2-1 loss to Liverpool after yet another slow start to the contest from them. Their Italian coach oversaw a huge push for the top four last season and after achieving that, a number of signings were made to improve quality and depth.

After a tough run of results though, Conte has urged his hierarchy to continue spending to compete at the top. "If you want to go to another level and be competitive, especially in England, to win in England, you need to invest, not only to invest but to invest a lot of money," said Carragher.

With the squad still in transition under their boss, there remains questions over how much he will be backed and whether he will get the players he wants. There's three specific transfers that Jamie Carragher believes would be best, including two defenders and a new goalkeeper.

Jamie Carragher, speaking on The Overlap, in partnership with Sky Bet, said: "Antonio Conte has had success playing this way, but the problem is he doesn’t have the goalkeeper or the defenders for right now for his plans to work as he it is far too easy for teams to score against them. Eric Dier has been okay this season, but Cristian Romero looks like the only defender who is good enough.

"For me, I have said this for years, and I know he is a World Cup winner, but Hugo Lloris is not good enough. In terms of getting Tottenham to the next level, he won’t cut it for them. The way Antonio Conte likes to set up his team, he needs better defenders and a better goalkeeper to help them be successful.”

It remains to be seen if that is the direction Spurs take in the transfer windows coming up, with the January edition on the horizon. However, it could be critical to the success or failure of Conte at the club.
