Jamie Carragher has admitted he is “surprised” Christian Pulisic did not leave Chelsea last month. Speculation surrounded the American’s future all summer, with Newcastle United one of several clubs linked.
It was no secret the Magpies were aiming to bolster their attacking options in the final few weeks of the transfer window. Alexander Isak completed a record-breaking move but Newcastle failed to recruit a desired wide player.
The resurgence of Miguel Almiron has softened the blow but Eddie Howe was thought to be keen on signing Pulisic. Arriving at Stamford Bridge from Borussia Dortmund in 2019, the winger has impressed for the Blues but struggled to showcase consistency.

However, his talent is undeniable and, at 23, has Father Time on his side. Pulisic reportedly attracted interest from Newcastle as well as Manchester United.
Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher suggested it is clear the Chelsea man’s career lies away from West London and cannot understand his decision to stay. He said: “I was surprised at what he has done at Chelsea (not leaving).
“Manchester United are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It looked like they were trying to get him on loan before buying him. I thought it would have given him confidence and a lift. He’s not daft.
“He knows his future isn’t at Chelsea. When you look at the clubs that were supposedly interested in him, I thought it would have given him a lift (to leave and join another team).”
