Jamie Carragher sparks Man City Haaland debate as Edu's Arsenal transfer decision vindicated

Gabriel Jesus made it eight goal contributions in as many games as the Brazilian scored Arsenal's second goal in their 3-1 victory over Tottenham. Jesus was on target as the Gunners secured the bragging rights on derby day and inflicted a first defeat of the season on Spurs.

Each passing week, Mikel Arteta and Edu's decision to sign Jesus this summer looks increasingly like a stroke of genius. It's not an exaggeration to suggest that he has been the main factor behind Arsenal's fantastic start to the season - not just because of his goal contributions, but because of his all-round game, especially the energy that he provides at the top end of the pitch.

It's rare that a Premier League side sells a player to a direct rival, but that happened twice between Manchester City and Arsenal this summer, with Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko making the switch from Manchester to north London. Neither were integral players in Pep Guardiola's system, but they more than played their part in City's dominance of the Premier League over the last five seasons.

Jesus never truly got the opportunity to show his talent on a regular basis at City, as he was often playing second fiddle to Sergio Aguero. He only played over 2,000 league minutes in two of his six seasons in Manchester.

After the Brazilian's scintillating display in the North London Derby, Jamie Carragher asked on Twitter whether City would have kept Jesus and not signed Erling Haaland if the 25-year-old had shown this kind of form during his time at the Etihad Stadium. Carragher posted: "If Gabriel Jesus was playing like he is now as a striker for Man City last season would they have bought Haaland?".

Many City fans pointed out that there were times Jesus performed in a similar fashion for their club, but just not on a regular basis. Ultimately, Jesus' move to Arsenal has benefitted all parties.

Jesus is playing regular football and flourishing playing in an exciting and attacking side, Arsenal are a much better side with the Brazilian in it, and City are hardly missing him - with Haaland bagging 14 goals in his first nine games.
