Jamie Carragher sends Trent Alexander-Arnold message to Gareth Southgate after Liverpool transformation

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold could compete for a place in midfield for England.

Jurgen Klopp has deployed Alexander-Arnold in a new role for Liverpool that has seen him start games in his usual right-back position, but is then given the freedom to roam in the middle of the pitch.

It is a move that has seen the 24-year-old return to form after recording six assists in his new position while smashing in a sublime free-kick in the 3-0 win at Leicester City on Monday night.

"Don’t forget it was Gareth Southgate that put him in midfield before anyone, Jurgen Klopp actually criticised Gareth Southgate for it. When you’re talking about England’s midfield options you’ve got Declan Rice, Bellingham, but there’s not really much behind that to be honest.

"Forget the hybrid role, I think he could be pushing them and could actually play the midfield role."
