Jamie Carragher says Kieran Trippier challenge on Kevin de Bruyne will be a 'red in the future'

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed that Kieran Trippier's challenge on Kevin de Bruyne during Newcastle's 3-3 draw against Manchester City will be a 'red [card] in the future'

Trippier was initially dismissed after lunging into a challenge on Man City midfielder de Bruyne in the 74th minute. After heading over to the pitchside monitor to review the decision, Gillett overturned the red card in favour of a yellow.

However, Carragher believes Trippier could be red carded for that type of challenge in the future.

"That Trippier tackle is going to be a red in the future," the former Liverpool and England defender tweeted.

"It's not a leg breaker, but why should a player be able to take someone out at knee height with no intention of winning the ball."

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer and his Match of the Day colleague Gary Lineker didn't share Carragher's view on the incident.

Shearer tweeted: "Far too quick to show the red. At least common sense has been shown."

Newcastle stormed into a 3-1 lead courtesy of goals from Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier respectively after Ilkay Gundogan had given City an early lead.

Erling Haaland reduced the deficit on the hour-mark before Bernardo Silva completed the comeback with an equaliser four minutes later. The draw ensured that Newcastle continued their unbeaten start to the season and also ended a run of six straight defeats against the Citizens across all competitions.
