Jamie Carragher refuses to blame FSG for Liverpool woes as Sadio Mane answer suggested

As the dust settles on the Reds' latest Premier League set-back, here's your Liverpool FC morning digest on Monday, February 6.

'I will get criticised' - Jamie Carragher defends FSG role in Liverpool crisis

Jamie Carragher insists that the fault for Liverpool's alarming drop-off in form this season does not lie with the club's owners Fenway Sports Group.

Former Anfield stalwart Carragher has been discussing the Anfield outfit's disastrous season on Sky Sports, in the wake of Saturday's humiliating 3-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After winning both domestic cup competitions last season and almost completing an unprecedented quadruple clean sweep, Jurgen Klopp's team have been a shadow of themselves this season. Out of both the Carabao and FA Cups already, they find themselves 10th in the Premier League and 11 points adrift of the top four, plunging their Champions League qualification hopes into major doubt.

But speaking on Sky Sports alongside pundits Graeme Souness and Micah Richards, Carragher had little interest in blaming the club's owners for a lack of investment being the root cause of the problems Liverpool currently face.

Turning his focus to the issues around the club's ownership, Carragher refused to single out FSG for the club's current performance issues. He said: "A lot of people are looking at the ownership. What's happening right now, I do not blame FSG one bit for that. I don't. I will now get criticised by certain sections of the supporters for being an apologist for the ownership. I've got no job at Liverpool. I don't know no (sic) owner at Liverpool. There's been no ex-players that's ever been more critical of this ownership than me, in terms of ticket prices, furloughing staff and the Super League. But you have to look at it properly and say this, for me, is down to the staff and the players and the recruitment team."

Sadio Mane could hold key to Mohamed Salah revival after role in Liverpool decline

To say Liverpool’s current fortunes are a slight contrast to those of twelve months ago would be a vast understatement.

Having survived a temporary wobble in late December 2021, which saw the Reds surrender significant ground to Manchester City in the title race and ultimately drop seven points in little under two weeks, Jurgen Klopp’s men would string together a run of 10 consecutive Premier League wins and consequently not sacrifice a single point until their highly anticipated visit to the Etihad in early April 2022.

At the core of such a momentous revival was Sadio Mane, who - after an extended amount of soul searching during the first half of the campaign - finally found his feet at Anfield once more as he was rejuvenated following a genius tactical tweak from the Liverpool manager.

Starring as Liverpool ended their 30-year wait for a league title in the summer of 2020, the Senegalese forward excelled over the course of a pulsating campaign as he fired the Reds to domestic kingship and established his own reputation as one of the continent’s most feared and talented wingers.
