Jamie Carragher praises Manchester United after 'nonsense' claims

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has praised Manchester United for 'getting back to where they belong' after several underwhelming campaigns in recent years.

Despite losing to Brighton and Brentford on the opening two weekends of the season, Erik ten Hag's side have performed well in the past few months and have climbed up the Premier League table. The Reds currently sit fourth in the top-flight, but are level on points with third-placed Newcastle United with a game in hand.

United, who have won their last six matches in all competitions, including the previous four in the Premier League, are still competing in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and have a Europa League play-off tie against Barcelona to come next month.

The Reds finished sixth in the Premier League last term and have not won a trophy since 2017. However, Carragher has insisted that talk of United taking five years to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool once again was always 'nonsense'.

"Last season when United had the awful results against Liverpool, and there was a lot of talk after it saying United are five years away from City and Liverpool, it just shows this is absolute nonsense," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "A top club, they get the right manager, add two or three players, and you’re nowhere near as far away as what supporters think.

"You get ups and downs, of course those games last season and the talk on the back of Man United, it was never going to be five years to get Manchester United back to where they belong, no chance."

United come up against Everton in the FA Cup and Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup in their next two matches - with Ten Hag desperate to progress in the domestic cup competitions.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of the game against the Toffees, the Dutchman said: "For me the cup is always special, I know in England FA Cup is even more higher expectations, higher standards than in the Netherlands, but I like the cup in the Netherlands as well, it's a different league.

"In not so many games you can achieve a lot, and you have to come away a winner, this is possible if you draw a replay but then after two it's a knockout and I like that."
