Jamie Carragher pokes fun at Roy Keane's Cristiano Ronaldo comments as Manchester United exit FA Cup

Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist the urge to aim a dig at Roy Keane after Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup.

United’s chances of silverware this season look to be over after they were beaten in the fourth round by Middlesbrough following a penalty shootout at Old Trafford.

Despite the hosts creating numerous chances, they wasted far too many as they were held to a 1-1 draw, with Matt Crooks’ controversial second-half goal cancelling out Jadon Sancho’s strike.

The Championship side then went on to win the shootout 8-7, with Anthony Elanga missing the vital spot-kick after neither goalkeeper had been able to make a save from the previous 15 efforts.

The defeat means United’s only remaining hope of silverware is the Champions League this season – and former Liverpool defender Carragher was quick to remind Keane of his previous comments on Cristiano Ronaldo.

The pair clashed on Sky Sports earlier this season as they argued about why United had brought the Portuguese superstar back to the club, with Keane insisting: “He’s not come back to win the league.”

Carragher then asked: “So what’s he come back for?! What’s he here for then?” with Keane replying: “When you won the FA Cup were you not buzzing with that? United are a cup team at the moment.”

Carragher followed up by asking: “Is that where Man United are now?”, with Keane replying: “Absolutely.”

Following United’s defeat in the cup, Carragher took to Twitter to bring the argument back to light.

“Roy Keane told me Man Utd had signed Ronaldo to win the #FACup,” Carragher tweeted, along with a shrugging emoji.

United are now left fighting on just two fronts, with the race for the Premier League’s top four their main focus as they look to ensure European football again next season.
