Jamie Carragher pokes fun at Roy Keane's Cristiano Ronaldo claim after Man United FA Cup loss

Jamie Carragher poked fun at Roy Keane and Manchester United fans after their exit from the FA Cup.

United were knocked out by Middlesbrough in a penalty shootout, after drawing 1-1 in normal and extra-time with the Championship side.

It was realistically United's biggest chance of silverware this season, with only the Premier League and Champions League to play in now for Ralf Rangnick's team.

And the former Liverpool player and Sky Sports pundit was quick to point that out, whilst reminding United fans, and colleague Keane of a previous conversation.

The two were involved in a heated exchange in November, with the big talking point from a game being United's decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench.

Keane and Carragher clashed over why Ronaldo was brought back to the club, with Keane responding that he could help United win the FA Cup.

Keane said: “What’s the game about? Scoring goals! You talk about Salah - the game's about goals Jamie! Ian Rush. what did he do? He scored goals.”

Carragher then fired back: “Did he press?” with Keane replying: “Yeah but he didn’t score as many as Ronaldo!”

With the former Liverpool defender adding: “He’s a phenomenon in terms of goals. But I mentioned this in midweek. PSG signed Messi and United signed Ronaldo. Are United closer to the title? NO. Are PSG closer to the Champions League with Messi? NO.”

Keane responded: “Ronaldo was never going to get United back to winning titles,” before Carragher asked: “So what was the point in signing him then?! He’s [nearly] 37!”

With Keane asking: “Did you win the FA Cup?” and Carragher answering: “Yeah I did.”

The United great then asked: “Yeah so go back to winning the FA Cup. They got through to the next round of the Champions League, how much you think that’s worth to the club? The Glazers and share prices - that’s what he’s come back for!”

Carragher then continued: “You finish second and sign Ronaldo at 36 - you’re not going to win the League in four years. If you sign someone at 36 it’s to win right now.

“If you sign Varane, a four-time Champions League winner, it's to win right now. Are they any closer to winning the league?”

With Keane replying: “No. He’s not come back to win the league.”

Carragher then asked: “So what’s he come back for?! What’s he here for then?” with Keane replying: “When you won the FA Cup were you not buzzing with that? United are a cup team at the moment.”

The two then continued with Keane saying: “For Cups” and Carragher asking: “Is that where Man United are now?” and Keane replied: “Absolutely.”

And remembering that moment, Carragher tweeted: "Roy Keane told me Man Utd had signed Ronaldo to win the #FACup."

Liverpool will hope to advance in the FA Cup, when Cardiff cup to Anfield on Sunday.
