Jamie Carragher pokes fun at himself after Kevin De Bruyne comment during Man City win

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was quick to ridicule himself after his assessment of Kevin De Bruyne's performance against Chelsea came back to bite him.

Manchester City secured an important 1-0 victory over Graham Potter's side on Thursday night, with substitutes Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahez combining for the only goal of the game in the second half. The Algerian attacker scored from close range to ensure the Blues returned to Manchester with all three points.

While City ultimately got the result they were after, it took a while for Pep Guardiola's side to find their rhythm in the clash at Stamford Bridge, with De Bruyne and Erling Haaland both struggling to influence the game as they would have liked.

As De Bruyne went to take a corner early in the second half, Carragher, who was on commentary duty for Sky Sports, claimed: "Not been his day today."

However, he was quickly made to look foolish after the Belgian midfielder delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area that defender Nathan Ake headed against the post.

Carragher was able to see the funny side of his gaffe, proceeding to poke fun at himself by joking: "What idiot commentator would question Kevin De Bruyne?!"

Unsurprisingly, De Bruyne grew into the match and played a part in the winning goal. The 31-year-old passed the ball perfectly into the path of Grealish, who squared the ball for Mahrez to convert from close range.

City closed the gap on current Premier League leaders Arsenal to just five points with the win over Chelsea, with the Gunners having dropped points to Newcastle in midweek.

De Bruyne, who endured a difficult World Cup campaign with Belgium, has been in spectacular form for the Blues so far this season - registering three goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
