Jamie Carragher pinpoints games where Liverpool and Man City could slip up in title race

Jamie Carragher believes the next round of fixtures could be a pivotal moment in the Premier League title race due to European commitments.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, with Pep Guardiola's side taking on Real Madrid at the Etihad on Tuesday and Jurgen Klopp's team welcoming Villarreal to Anfield on Wednesday.

Both games could take a lot out of the title rivals and they could slip up in their next Premier League fixtures, which take place on Saturday. City face Leeds at Elland Road and Liverpool take on Newcastle at St James' Park.

It's important to note the second legs of both Champions League ties take place just days after Saturday's Premier League fixtures. Liverpool play Villarreal in Spain on Tuesday, May 3, while City will try to overcome Real in the same country 24 hours later.

After Leeds, City will play Newcastle (home, May 8), West Ham (away, May 15), Aston Villa (home, May 22) and Wolves (away, to be confirmed). Liverpool, meanwhile, must face Tottenham (home, May 7), Aston Villa (away, May 10), Wolves (home, May 22) and Southampton (away, to be confirmed) after their game against Newcastle.

The Reds moved within a point of City on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 2-0 victory against Everton at Goodison Park. Guardiola's side hammered Watford 5-1 the previous day, with Gabriel Jesus scoring four goals at the Etihad.

Liverpool are aiming to win an unprecedented quadruple after winning the EFL Cup and reaching the final of the FA Cup. City, on the other hand, can still win both the Premier League and Champions League - the two biggest trophies available.

And Carragher believes the next 10 days could define their respective campaigns. "For both teams, the game in-between a Champions League semi-final will take so much out of you, physically and mentally," Carragher told Sky Sports on Sunday.

"Something could happen in the next league game... I do look at the next couple of games, as I said with Everton, if Liverpool can stay in the same position getting into West Ham for Man City, it looks more favourable in Liverpool."

When asked if Liverpool can win the Premier League, former captain Graeme Souness told Sky Sports: "Why not? The belief they have. They dug out a result today. They won a different type of football. If you’re going to win the league you’ve got to do that."

Ex-Everton striker Kevin Campbell added: "I think it’s going to go down to wire. I choose City at the start but I think Liverpool will miss out from one point. I can see both winning now."

Premier League fans could be in for a repeat of the 2018-19 campaign, when neither Liverpool or City blinked in the race for the title and the latter won it by just a point. City won 14 consecutive league games, while the Reds won nine on the bounce.
