Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has performed a U-turn on the Premier League title race following on from Liverpool’s win at Arsenal on Wednesday night.
Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino scored in quick succession midway through the second half to give Jurgen Klopp 's side a priceless three points in the title race away at the Gunners. The result takes the Reds to within just one point of Manchester City, who were held to a scoreless draw at Crystal Palace on Monday night.
Eyes are now increasingly becoming focused on the crunch title clash between the two titles hopefuls on 10 April at City’s Etihad home. Prior to that, City travel to Burnley while Klopp’s side play host to Watford – before potentially the defining game in the Premier League season.
Yet Wednesday night’s two-goal victory at Arsenal was hailed by former Reds defender Carragher as the moment that makes his old club start to believe they can land the league title. Up until that game, the former England international had insisted that City were favourites and in the driving seat for the title.
Carragher explained on Skysports: “I think it is absolutely massive. I think everyone now connected with Liverpool Football Club thinks that they will go on and win the league. This is certainly the first time this season that I have believed that they can go on and win it.
“Manchester City are still there, and there is only a point in it, but I think the momentum Liverpool must have now, they could go top in their next game. You can see the reaction of the fans and the players.

“Manchester City are still in great form and have only dropped off a little bit, but imagine what Anfield is going to be like. You see those supporters now and I believe every single person in that away end believes we are going to win the Premier League.”
City have now dropped points in three of their last seven Premier League matches – Monday’s draw at Palace followed on from dropped points at Southampton in January and losing at home to Tottenham last month.
Conversely, Liverpool have now won eight Premier League matches in a row – a run which started following a 2-2 draw at Chelsea on 2 January. Perhaps most notably for Klopp’s side, they have conceded just three goals in those eight league matches.
Both Liverpool and City remain in both the FA Cup and the Champions League, with the draw for the quarter-finals of the latter taking place on Friday. The Reds could still feasibly win the quadruple this campaign, having lifted the EFL Cup last month.
