Jamie Carragher outlines the 'huge' importance of Leeds United's win over Norwich City

Jamie Carragher has outlined the importance Leeds United's victory over Norwich City. The Whites won in dramatic fashion thanks to Joe Gelhardt's stoppage time strike.

In a game of huge significance towards the bottom of the Premier League, the Whites began on the front foot and took an early lead through Rodrigo, who latched on to Daniel James' pass before firing the ball into the corner via a deflection. Leeds missed a number of chances to doubled their advantage, as Raphinha hit the woodwork twice and Patrick Bamford failed to hit the target from a one-on-one opportunity. And the Whites were punished when Kenny McLean levelled in stoppage-time.

However, Jesse Marsch's side didn't give up and scored a dramatic last-gasp winner as Raphinha squared the ball across to Gelhardt, who tapped home to spark delirium amongst the Leeds faithful. It was a win that moved the Whites four points clear of the relegation zone - which is a healthy cushion heading into the final nine matches.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher has admitted that it was 'massive' for Marsch to get off the mark and earn his first victory in charge of the Whites after replacing Marcelo Bielsa last month. He also heaped praise on Gelhardt for netting his second top-flight goal.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, he said: "It was a huge victory. I looked at some of the highlights yesterday and they battered Norwich to be fair, they should've been well clear. They had so many chances.

"Norwich got back into it very late and you can imagine how they felt conceding so late on. It was very tense towards the end and I thought it might be another bad result for them.

"But Joe Gelhardt comes on, a Bootle lad who moved to Leeds from Wigan. He gets the flick on initially against the big defender and the composure he shows, he doesn't panic. It's an open goal but he keeps his composure. He's a special talent and I can ensure you, he's a young lad that we'll be speaking about a lot in a few years time.

"It was massive for Jesse Marsch. I watched the Leicester game and they have certainly looked a lot more solid, they really have. There is certainly a lot of things you can see from Bielsa in terms of the pressing and getting after people.

"But what that will do for them psychologically is huge. If they wouldn't have won that game against Norwich, though, that's the type of team you want to be playing at home. They would have been thinking if they can't win that game, what can they win. So, it's huge for them."
