Jamie Carragher on season-defining Arsenal fixture as Mikel Arteta's side chase top-four finish

Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal are set for a 'tough night' as the Gunners head to St. James Park to face Newcastle United in their penultimate Premier League game of the season.

Mikel Arteta's side ran out 2-1 winners over Leeds United on Sunday thanks to a brace from forward Eddie Nketiah, as opposition defender Luke Ayling was dismissed following a reckless challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

The Gunners are now just one point behind rivals Chelsea in the table and have Tottenham, Newcastle and Everton still to play. Spurs are chasing their own European destiny, as they sit four points behind their North London rivals.

With Antonio Conte's side to come next, Carragher has outlined Arsenal's clash with the Magpies as a potentially sticky wicket. "It’ll be a tough night," said the former Liverpool defender, as he spoke following their most recent victory.

"The atmosphere they’ve created there in the last few months, certainly with the flags behind the goal, they do create something special. They’ll want to go out with a bang, looking forward to next season, so I think it’ll be a tough game for Arsenal."

Newcastle have secured their status in the Premier League for next season, following a superb up-turn under manager Eddie Howe.

However, the Toon were easily pushed aside at the Etihad by league leaders Manchester City this weekend, with Howe's men now potentially keen to ruin any early Arsenal celebrations in just under a weeks time.
