Jamie Carragher bid a hasty retreat in his opinion of Moises Caicedo’s £110million transfer fee after it emerged the midfielder had rejected Liverpool in favour of Chelsea.
Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday reports that the Reds had agreed a club-record deal to land the Ecuadorian from Brighton.
Chelsea have seen numerous offers rejected by the Seagulls in their pursuit of Caicedo, who has attempted to force through the switch to west London in recent weeks.
However, multiple reports have since emerged of the 21-year-old rejecting Liverpool in the hope of signing for the Blues - while they formulate a new bid to convince Brighton to sell up.
Amid the mayhem, Anfield legend Carragher delivered his take on Caicedo rocking up on Merseyside, which he deemed “great business” as part of Alexis Mac Allister’s signing and the sales of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.
He tweeted: “£110M is a big price for Caicedo but Liverpool had to pay big as clubs knew they were desperate.
“But signing two top young players for £145M and selling two of your older players for £52M is great business!”
Only hours later, when the reports of Caicedo choosing Stamford Bridge emerged, Sky Sports pundit Carragher made a sharp U-turn as he criticised co-owner Todd Boehly, likely in a bid to wind up Chelsea fans ahead of the two clubs’ meeting in the Premier League on Sunday.
He claimed: “£110M is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a 21-year-old, Boehly has lost his mind yet again.”
With Chelsea yet to agree a fee with Brighton by Friday lunchtime, there are potentially plenty more twists and turns still to come in this saga.
