Jamie Carragher has compared Mohamed Salah's Africa Cup of Nations penalty shootout decision to Cristiano Ronaldo's against Spain for Portugal.
For the Liverpool attacker, it was heartache, as two of his Egyptian teammates squandered opportunities from 12-yards meaning he didn't get to take Egypt's fifth penalty in a 4-2 shootout defeat.
His teammate Sadio Mane atoned for his penalty miss in normal time to earn Senegal their first Africa Cup of Nations triumph with his side's fifth penalty.
The Sky Sports pundit likened the decision to the one made by Manchester United star during the 2012 European Championships.
Carragher tweeted: "That is why your best penalty taker should never go fifth. Mo Salah not taking a penalty for Egypt in a shootout in a final is madness. Also happened to Ronaldo years ago for Portugal v Spain. #AFCON2021 #SENEGY."
With the shootout finely poised at 3-2 in Spain's favour, a decade ago, Bruno Alves stepped up and saw his effort rattle crossbar and as a result, Cesc Fabregas saw his penalty nestle in the back of the net to send them into the final.
The decision from Ronaldo to take the final penalty would prove to be a decisive one as they bowed out of the Euros in the last four as Vicente del Bosque's side went on to win the tournament.
Former United attacker Nani confirmed following their defeat that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner had demanded to be the final player to take a spot-kick.
He said in 2012: "I don’t think there was any controversy or any mistakes.
"Cristiano demanded the last penalty. I said to the coach I would accept any order.
"It didn’t seem to be a problem to me, because penalty shoot-outs are all about luck and we did not deserve to lose like that."
