Jamie Carragher makes Chelsea and Liverpool Premier League title claim Man City fans will hate

Former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Chelsea and Liverpool have a “glimmer of hope” left in the title race after the weekend’s results.

The Blues managed to earn their fourth win over London rivals Tottenham this season with a 2-0 victory, having already played them in the league and twice in the Carabao Cup before Sunday’s match.

A left-footed curling effort from Hakim Ziyech found its way into the top-left corner of the goal to give his side the lead minutes into the second-half, with Thiago Silva’s header doubling the lead shortly after.

It moves Chelsea to within ten points of leaders Manchester City, following their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

It may be an unlikely feat for the Blues to overturn such a points difference, especially over a side such as Pep Guardiola’s, but stranger things have happened in football.

Equally, Liverpool will likely be thinking the same. The Reds moved nine points behind the leaders, but with two games in-hand over Chelsea and one over Manchester City.

Thomas Tuchel’s men will now have a slight break from Premier League action, playing Plymouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup next before a trip to play in the Club World Cup.

It could be the perfect respite for the German coach, who admitted to his players feeling tired physically and mentally.

On their return, they may have the slightest of hope in winning the title, with Jamie Carragher believing that to be the case.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the former defender said: “[Manchester] City have put huge pressure on Liverpool and Chelsea and they’ve sort of fell really in terms of drawing games.

“It’s not been too bad of a run for both teams but City have just been relentless and maybe there’s a glimmer of hope off the back of the result last night against Southampton for Man City.

“But I don't think that just last night I think that would give hope to Liverpool in the future that Man City can drop points and as I said over the next three or four months before the end of the season there will be more points dropped.”

It will remain to be seen just how Manchester City respond to dropping points against Southampton, though the mission seems clear for Chelsea.

All the Blues can do is keep winning games and hope that other teams do them favours heading into the final knockings of the season.
