Jamie Carragher issues 'couldn't cope' verdict as Liverpool thrash Manchester United 7-0 amid top four battle

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool are looking back to their best as they registered an historic 7-0 victory against Manchester United to boost their top four hopes.

Liverpool climbed above Newcastle United into fifth and trail Tottenham Hotspur by only three points after a run of four wins from five in the Premier League.

Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah all bagged braces, as the latter became Liverpool's all-time Premier League top scorer, on a day in which they recorded their heaviest ever win over their bitter rivals.

Manchester United completely collapsed just seven days after defeating the Magpies 2-0 at Wembley to lift the Carabao Cup - shipping six goals during a disgraceful second half performance.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher felt Liverpool produced the type of performance usually associated with a Jurgen Klopp side.

"The enjoyment of seeing the goals go in but the actual shock of how has this ended up like this second half? From both teams points of view," Carragher told Sky Sports.

"Seeing Manchester United so bad in that second half, and seeing Liverpool so good. We haven't seen that performance really - I don't feel at any time this season.

"That second half performance felt like Liverpool from two or three years ago where the opposition just couldn't cope with them.

"Especially at Anfield, every time they lost the ball, they won it back quick, and they'd be right at you but [I'm] delighted obviously but for Man United it was just a shock all round."

As it stands, Newcastle trail Liverpool by one-point having played a game fewer than Jurgen Klopp's side, and are four points adrift of fourth-place Tottenham with two games in hand.
