Jamie Carragher has expressed his concern for Everton’s midfield and believes the Goodison Park club will have started to worry about their league position following the defeat to Leicester City.
The Blues finished 16th last season, having secured their Premier League survival on the penultimate day with a dramatic 3-2 win over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park. Lampard’s side came from 2-0 down at the break to claim all three points.
Ahead of their last three home matches, thousands of Everton supporters arrived early and took to the streets to produce incredible scenes as Lampard and his squad arrived for the game. Banners and flags were on full display, there was constant loud singing and numerous smoke bombs filled the air to create a raucous atmosphere.

However, the Blues’ brush with relegation prompted a squad summer overhaul. Eight senior players arrived at Goodison Park, with 19 leaving either on a permanent or temporary basis.
Three midfielders were signed by Lampard and Kevin Thelwell, with Amadou Onana the most high-profile, joining from Lille for £33m. James Garner and Idrissa Gueye also joined the club.
And even though Carragher believes Blues boss Lampard has built a strong rapport with supporters, he has concerns about Everton’s midfield, which he feels is capable of being overrun far too easily.
“The Premier League is brilliant at the moment – everything is so tight,” he told the latest edition of The Overlap, in partnership with Sky Bet.
“There is no team marooned at the bottom, and there’s no one clear at the top of the table. Where Everton find themselves after losing at the weekend to Leicester, they will start worrying about their league position.
“All the teams near the bottom, they’ve either all changed their manager or are thinking about doing so – they’re not happy.
“The key thing that Frank Lampard has done is building that rapport with supporters. There’s something there where if Everton get beaten, no one will be pointing a finger at Frank.
“That togetherness, off the back of surviving last season. Everton won’t get into a similar situation, but I think they will be around those bottom places. Midfield is a problem for Everton, they can get overrun easily.”
