Jamie Carragher hammers 'weak' Everton and makes blunt relegation claim

Jamie Carragher has branded Everton "weak" and believes the team could be relegated from the Premier League.

The Toffees were hammered 5-0 by Tottenham Hotspur on Monday, leaving them in 17th place in the table and just a point clear of Burnley in 18th.

For manager Frank Lampard, the loss was his fourth in five Premier League games since taking charge.

Everton now face up to two crucial home games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United, as they seek to pull themselves clear of trouble.

Following those two fixtures, the Toffees take on West Ham United, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

With Everton's situation getting increasingly graver, Carragher said on Monday Night Football that the team's shocking away form is a poor reflection on their character.

"The only way this team is going to stay up is Goodison Park," he said. "One of the reasons why I think appointing Frank Lampard at the time was that he was the only candidate that the supporters brought in and were happy.

"It hasn’t been a great start, but there has been an atmosphere and energy at Goodison Park. We have mentioned how many home games that they have left, which is eight, because you can’t see them picking up the points away from home.

"The only thing about playing away from home, it is easy to play at home as you have the crowd behind you, but when you go away from home, it is not just about quality, it is about personality and that’s when you see the teams are at the bottom or at the top.

"When a team is bad away from home, the first thing that comes into my head is that they are weak, and that can never be Everton."

Carragher also highlighted the importance of the upcoming Goodison double-header and suggested that not winning either of those matches would leave the team in a desperate position.

"When I look at those first two home games, notoriously you would say Newcastle at home, Wolves at home, you would expect Everton to get at least four points from those games.

"If those two games saw Everton come out with one point, I think it would be the first time in my life that I would believe that Everton could go down.

"I have always believed that, even going back to some of the worst Everton teams in the early 90’s, you still never believed that Everton would go down.

"If Everton do not win their next two home games, I think Everton have a massive problem."
