Jamie Carragher gives verdict on potential £10m transfer and Liverpool defensive rebuild

Jamie Carragher believes Joel Matip's time at Anfield could be coming to an end as he urges Liverpool to consider cashing in on the defender.

Matip is no longer in the first choice partnership for Jurgen Klopp as Ibrahima Konate now the man chosen to start alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The Cameroonian has been a fantastic servant for the Reds since signing on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016 as he enters the final year of his contract at Anfield.

Matip has been a key part to Liverpool winning every major honour under Klopp, but is now 31-years-old and featured just 21 times for the Reds last season.

Carragher has stressed the need for a left-footed centre back at Liverpool as he suggested bids of over £10 million should be considered.

The Liverpool legend said on Redmen TV: “I look at the defence and I think Joel Matip now has got a year to go. If you got £10million, whatever the price may be, it’s probably right to move on.

“I do think we need a left-sided defender, a left-footed centre-back. A lot of teams have them, we don’t. A left-sided player would add something.

“Rather than getting a left-back because I don’t think we will, if we are going to continue with this formation now, (it should be) buying someone in that area, a centre-back who can do the full-back role. I definitely think a left-sided centre-back who can do that left-back job.”
