Jamie Carragher fires Newcastle United and Eddie Howe top four warning ahead of Liverpool clash

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that his old club must get all three points when they travel to Newcastle United at St. James' Park this weekend if they want to stay in the race for the top four.

Jurgen Klopp's side will be full of confidence after an impressive display over Everton in the Merseyside Derby as they ran out 2-0 victors thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo.

But Carragher believes that fans saying that Liverpool 'are back' might be getting ahead of themselves before the clash against the Magpies on Saturday, and says there's still a lot the club needs to do to get back to the top.

"Oh no, we’ve said that a few times this season, they’ve got to get a few more results and performances like that," Carragher told Sky Sports after the match against Everton last night.

"Real Madrid coming soon, Newcastle will be a really tough game, probably one of the toughest games away you can have right now in the Premier League so if Liverpool get a result there, put in a similar performance, then you can say yeah.

"We saw a performance like this against Manchester City in the first half of the season and Liverpool didn’t really kick on from there, but yeah, it’s a big three points for Liverpool, it really was, given the nature of the opponent, big rivals. As I said, there’s a long way to go in this season."

Klopp's side currently sit nine points off Eddie Howe's men in ninth place, having recently fallen to 10th after a period of torrid form across the start of 2023, scoring just once in their four matches this year before the win over Everton.

When asked whether Liverpool can still make top four, the 45-year-old highlighted their clash against the Magpies as one that will determine the rest of their season.

"I still think it’s a big outside chance, I think Liverpool’s next game away at Newcastle will be vital. If Liverpool can get three points in that game then I think they are back in the equation.

"But there is still so long in the season to go for both clubs in terms of trying to get into a European place or top four."
