Jamie Carragher explains why Newcastle shouldn’t be written off in the race for the top four

Jamie Carragher says Newcastle United are still well in the race for Champions League football and should not be written off despite just one win in their last eight Premier League outings. That run of form has seen Eddie Howe's side drop from third in the table to sixth, although they do have games in hand on top four rivals Liverpool and Tottenham.

Wins in their two games in hand would lift the Magpies back into the Champions League places and they would go two points clear of Spurs in fourth. However, the Toon must start scoring goals having struggled to do so of late.

Carragher says Newcastle's fantastic defensive record means they're always in games, but they need Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak to step up to the plate and chip in with goals.

Carragher told Sky Sports' Monday Night Football: "The big plus point they've got is the defensive record is fantastic. They're always in games.

"So, more often than not, Newcastle don't need a lot of goals to win the game. But, as I said, it has been a problem for them of late [not scoring goals].

"Callum Wilson just doesn't seem the same player since he's came back from the World Cup. Isak, he had more than a great cameo when he came on in the cup final.

"Between the two of them they're going to need to find some goals to make the difference, but I would not be writing them off, I still think they're well in the race."
