Jamie Carragher delivers Nottingham Forest relegation verdict ahead of Newcastle test

Nottingham Forest have been told that they have "a decent chance" of avoiding relegation this season ahead of the Reds match against Newcastle United on Friday night.

Steve Cooper's side have won just once away from home this season, but results at the City Ground which includes a famous win over Liverpool and draws against Chelsea and Manchester City have kept them out of the Premier League bottom three.

The Reds could go five points clear of the relegation zone heading into the weekend's fixtures if they can secure another home win when they take on the Magpies. And Forest's form at the City Ground is what Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes will give Forest their best chance of avoiding the drop.

The former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports: "It will be about games here, their away record is really poor but I think here it's been fantastic. They're unbeaten for a while, they've beaten Liverpool here, taken a point from Manchester City, so this will be a tough game tonight for Newcastle.

"You would say Newcastle are favourites but this has been the ground to pick up points for Nottingham Forest and make sure they stay in this league and I think they still have a decent chance.

"The one big blow might be Johnson being left out. I think him and Morgan Gibbs White have been the two players, every time you watch them can win them the game, certainly at home. So I think that will be a blow and with him being out if that's the case, I think I would make Newcastle the favourites, but as I said there is still a lot of home games to go.

"But tonight feels like a really big one for Nottingham Forest because I think if they win now before the international break, everyone will have that belief that they will stay up but I think if they get beat it will be the exact opposite."
