Jamie Carragher blasts "absolutely disgraceful" PSG for humiliating Champions League exit

Jamie Carragher has slammed Paris Saint-Germain after their capitulation against Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

Mauricio Pochettino's side surrendered a 2-0 aggregate lead in the final 30 minutes of the two-legged tie, as Karim Benzema scored a shock hat-trick at the Bernabeu.

PSG have dominated in Ligue 1 since Qatar Sports Investments - a subsidiary of Qatar's state-run sovereign-wealth fund - purchased the French club in 2011.

Yet they've failed to win the Champions League - the owners' ultimate aim - despite signing the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi.

The closest PSG have come is the final in 2020 - when they lost to Bayern Munich - and many believe their defence is the main reason for their continued failure.

Real's third goal on Wednesday evening came just seconds after their second, leaving former Liverpool defender Carragher furious in the CBS Sports studio.

"This is absolutely embarrassing, 11 seconds," said Carragher. "If Real Madrid were playing against an Under-15 team or a kids team, this shouldn't happen.

"This is absolutely disgraceful, it really is. Players at this level, where they've just got to dig in and fight.

"They really have, obviously really difficult position where they've just conceded two goals but to do that straight from a kick-off is absolutely embarrassing."

Carragher's CBS Sports colleague Thierry Henry singled out PSG captain Marquinhos - who made a mistake for the third goal - for his role in their collapse.

"It's pretty obvious that Marquinhos has these type of mistakes, he did it a lot in the game," said the Arsenal legend.

"Instead of clearing the ball he tried to play and pass the ball to Kimpembe, but Benzema was alert and arrived there before him!"

Wednesday evening wasn't the first time PSG have collapsed in the Champions League. Five years ago, they surrendered a three-goal lead against Barcelona - having already played 88 minutes - during their famous 6-1 loss at the Nou Camp.

"The players are too powerful," former Real midfielder Steve McManaman told BT Sport.

"They were too powerful under [ex-boss] Thomas Tuchel, too powerful under [ex-boss] Unai Emery, too powerful under this man [Pochettino].

"They can’t get told off and when the going gets tough, they do not care.

"They play where they want to play. The top three are amazing footballers but they don’t work hard, they do not work hard when the going gets tough."

McManaman went on to slam "powerless" manager Pochettino, who is now likely to be sacked - whether that's in the coming days or at the end of the season.

"The manager has no power over this team," added McManaman.

"He has no power over the front three, over [Marco] Veratti, Marquinhos, because we’ve seen managers come and go and they cannot sort this out.

"It’s such a short term fix going to PSG. You go, get knocked out of the Champions League early, get sacked and go on to bigger and better things.

"Just like Thomas Tuchel’s done. We know how good he is as a manager, because he’s shown us. But no one can do it with this team until they change the personnel.

"They can have one or two up there, but can’t have four or five who don’t fancy it when the going gets tough, no chance."
