Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville clash over next Everton manager after Frank Lampard sacking

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville disagreed over Everton's rumoured managerial targets with the latter arguing that the Blues are "all over the place" in their identity.

Frank Lampard became the latest managerial casualty under owner Farhad Moshiri as his time at Goodison Park came to an end just shy of his one-year anniversary in charge.

A withering run of one win in 14 games spelt the end of his tenure with their dismal 2-0 defeat to West Ham proving to be the final straw.

LAMPARD SACKED: Frank Lampard sacked as Everton manager

LIVE: Lampard sacked and next manager latest

Since news emerged that the former Chelsea midfielder had been relieved of his duties, former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa and Sean Dyche had emerged as front runners for the Everton job - according to reports.

However, the former Manchester United defender wasn't convinced by the early options and his comments were quickly rebutted by Carragher.

Here is the back-and-forth in full:

Gery Neville: "They've moved from different styled managers, they've spent money with them all but you're going from [Ronald] Koeman to [Sam] Allardyce, from [Carlo] Ancelotti to [Rafael] Benitez to [Frank] Lampard.

"You're moving backward and forward to different styles, one end of the spectrum to the other - they are absolutely all over the place when it comes to the identity of the football project that they've got, they've not go an identity at Everton.

"I think we're all pretty clear, everybody in football is pretty clear what Everton should be as a football club. It should be high energy, high tempo, getting the fans going, getting the ball forward as quick as possible - I'm not talking about lump ball here. I'm talking about Everton's style of play that you feel that club has one. Just like how I fell my club has one, your club might have one."

Dave Jones: "There is two managers who might be able to deliver that type of football, very different, [Marcelo] Bielsa and [Sean] Dyche."

Gary Neville: "How can you have Bielsa and Dyche? Let's say that was the shortlist, it wouldn't surprise you that shortlist that we've seen before - Koeman, Allardyce, Benitez, Ancelotti..."

Jamie Carragher: "I hear this all the time and I feel for clubs when they're picking managers because they say they're completely different. Have you picked the same manager every time you pick a manager for Salford? The exact same?"

Gary Neville: "The idea is you settle on a manager that will fit the style of the players."

Jamie Carragher: "How many clubs do that?"

Gary Neville: "Most. A lot of clubs do that..."

Jamie Carragher: "No they don't! We've got two clubs tonight Tottenham and Fulham. Tottenham go from a footballing manager to a pragmatic manager."

Gary Neville: "My point is a lot of clubs are run well and we don't think they're run particularly well do we? Tottenham haven't won a trophy for how many years?"

Jamie Carragher: "Name me a club who do that? "

Gary Neville: "What do you mean name you a club that do that? "

Jamie Carragher: "Manchester United never did it?"

Gary Neville: "Huh?"

Jamie Carragher: "They went with Jose [Mourinho] and David Moyes."

Gary Neville: "And I was critical of them."

Jamie Carragher: "Well name me one that does."

Gary Neville: "You told me Manchester United should go with Conte."

Jamie Carragher: "No I didn't."

Gary Neville: "You're on record saying Manchester United should go with Conte. I said from a style of play point of view, Manchester United have to stick with what they do which is playing good football in a fast tempo kind of way.

"Clubs have to pick an identity, pick a group of players that fit an identity then pick a coach in that fits that style. That's the ideal way, not always right, but Everton have moved from one end of the spectrum to the other, they've got no consistency, they're all over the place and I have to say you have to start looking at the players to be fair.

"They are a shambles. Some of them mistakes they're making, they're experienced players some of them by the way."
