Jamie Carragher admits "I've never been more wrong" after U-turning on Arsenal signing

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted he was completely wrong about Arsenal signing Aaron Ramsdale after the goalkeeper kept the Gunners alive at Anfield on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta's men drew 2-2 with the Reds, but things could have been oh so different and both sides can legitimately come away wondering how they didn't secure all three points. It was Arsenal who started the brighter and raced into a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus.

However, Mohamed Salah hit back for the hosts just before half-time and though the Egyptian missed a penalty, Roberto Firmino spared his blushes at the tail-end of the second half with an equaliser. His header marked the Brazilian's 11th goal against the Gunners.

What followed stunned just about everyone, as Ramsdale produced not one but two spectacular saves to deny Liverpool victory. The first saw him tip a deflected Salah effort wide, while the second prevented what looked to be a certain Ibrahima Konate goal from close range.

Plenty of post-match plaudits were sent Ramsdale's way, but the shot-stopper hasn't always been as highly rated as he is nowadays. His arrival at Arsenal, particularly for the £24million fee the Gunners paid, was questioned.

Carragher was among those who wondered why Arsenal had made a huge effort to sign a goalkeeper who had suffered successive relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United but has since confessed he was wrong as he waxed lyrical over Ramsdale.

"Listen, we all say different things at different times and you're proven wrong about managers, players, certain teams," the ex-Anfield ace told Sky Sports.

"I don't think I've ever been more wrong, or certainly this season proven wrong, [than] by Aaron Ramsdale. I watched him at times obviously with different teams where he goes down, you see lots of goals go in, you think, 'Can the keeper do better there?'

"And then when Arsenal bought him I was scratching my head. I'll be honest, I could not believe it when they bought him. But how he's overtaken [Bernd] Leno – he's had to move on – and his position in the England squad now as well."

Carragher went on to heap further praise on the Arsenal number one and explained how Ramsdale's personality is also a huge weapon for the Gunners as "the crowd feed off him."

Following the game, Ramsdale admitted the Gunners' dressing room was one of mixed emotions.

Pressed for comment on whether he viewed the result as one point gained or two dropped, the 24-year-old replied: "A bit of both. We managed to dig in at the end but we had some good chances when we come to Anfield and played it really well, but had to survive as well so I think right now it will be mixed emotions."
