Jamie Cannon: Anguish for family as missing youngster turns 20 today

Missing Ayrshire youngster Jamie Cannon turns 20 years old today.

The Saltcoats man vanished into thin air on May 20 last year and hasn't been spotted since.

Jamie was 19 when he disappeared in North Ayrshire — almost eight months ago.

Today, Ayrshire's top cop Chief Superintendent Faroque Hussain has said he can't begin to imagine the anguish that Jamie's parents are experiencing.

The Ayrshire Divisional Commander tweeted: "Today is Jamie’s birthday and my thoughts very much remain with his family and friends.

"As a parent, I cannot imagine the anguish Jamie’s parents are going through.

"Please cast your mind back to May 20 — do you recall seeing anyone in Ayrshire fitting Jamie’s description?

Where was Jamie last seen?

Jamie was last seen on Thursday, May 20 around 10am on Kinnier Road, Saltcoats and was reported missing two days later on Saturday, May 22.

What does he look like?

Cannon is 6ft 1in tall with short brown hair and was last seen wearing grey jogging bottoms, grey trainers and a blue jacket, carrying a camouflage backpack.

Have there been other sightings?

There have been no other known sightings of the missing teen and his worried family have described his disappearance to police as "completely out of character for him".

What have the police been doing?

Local officers have been assisted by specialist officers, including search advisors and the dog unit, but there have been no further sightings of him.

On May 22, two days after Jamie was reported missing, Sergeant Paterson at Saltcoats police office issued a plea to the public to be on the lookout for the teen.

He said: “Jamie has been missing for a number of days now, this is out of character for him and his family are looking for him to make contact with them and for his safe return home. We have a number of resources looking for Jamie and we are now looking for assistance from the public.”

The following day, Inspector Colin Shearer of Irvine police station issued another appeal this time pleading with Jamie to "make contact with the police or your family or friends to let them know you are safe and well."

And on June 4 police posted another appeal for information on the Ayrshire Police Division Facebook page to help trace the teen.

Sergeant Allen Dodds said: “Despite previous appeals and extensive searches and enquiries to trace Jamie, we have been unable to locate him. As time goes on, we are extremely concerned as he has never been missing before and it is entirely out of character for him not to keep in contact with his family and friends.

“Understandably, his family is extremely distressed by his disappearance and just want to know that he is safe and well. I would urge anyone who has seen Jamie, or who has any information on his whereabouts to contact us as soon as possible through 101 quoting reference 1623 of 22 May.”

And in August police said a strategic ‘gold command’ had been established to deal with teenager’s disappearance.

Meanwhile, the family have set up a Facebook group to help trace Jamie with more than 13,000 people joining the page.
