James Tavernier seizes on Rangers 'momentum' and what Viaplay Cup Final win over Celtic could do

Rangers captain James Tavernier believes lifting the Viaplay Cup will spark added momentum in their pursuit of catching Celtic in the league.

Ange Postecoglou's side have been relentless in the Scottish Premiership and have cruised nine points clear at the top of their Glasgow rivals at the top of the table, with Michael Beale's unbeaten run since arrive at Ibrox unable to close the gap on the defending champions. However, full back Tavernier reckons that a victory at Hampden on Sunday could prove decisive in Rangers closing the gap on their Celtic Park counterparts.

The Light Blues' skipper has refused to give up his hopes of lifting the trophy at the end of the campaign with the club currently on a 14 game unbeaten run. Tavernier remained undeterred in his title belief and believes a Viaplay Cup final victory could be the key to continuing the "momentum" and surging towards glory in the league.

Asked by Sky Sports how the cup final could impact on the Premiership title race, Tavernier said: "Obviously on our behalf, if we do win the cup, it will keep us in that right momentum we need to be and stand us in good stead for the next game and the games to come.

"We know it'll be a tough game with tough opposition but we know if we're at our best and sticking to the managers plans, we'll give it our all and whether it's 90 or 120 minutes you've got to do everything possible to bring that cup home."

Asked what he expects from Celtic, he said: 'A tough game. They are tough opposition but we have got to give it our all. If it is 90 or 120 minutes we have got do everything possible."
