James Tavernier's Rangers captaincy addressed by Philippe Clement

Philippe Clement insists he has no immediate plans to look at changing the captain of Rangers.

James Tavernier has had the captaincy for several seasons now having assumed the role from Lee Wallace under Steven Gerrard.

With the arrival of Clement, the right-back is getting ready to play under the sixth permanent manager of his time in Glasgow since 2015.

The Englishman has been a key player for Rangers since joining way back during their spell in the Championship. He has a whopping 226 goal contributions in just over 400 appearances.

During his time at the club, Tavernier has come under some intense scrutiny for only lifting two major trophies. He captained the club to the league title during the 2020/21 campaign and then to the 2022 Scottish Cup triumph.

Numerous supporters have called for a changing of the guard with regards to the armband, but Clement says there will be no rush into any decisions as he has more pressing issues to deal with.

He said: "I don't see a reason for the moment to change those things. I think I need to focus on many others for the moment and step by step look at what is the best story for the club. But I don't see a reason at the moment to change that, no."

Meanwhile, James Bisgrove has confirmed Rangers are in talks to appoint a director of football.

The club has not had someone in the role since Ross Wilson's departure to Nottingham Forest with Michael Beale operating without one during his tenure.

However, the chief executive has confirmed an appointment of a director of football could be "imminent" with conversations ongoing with candidates.

On whether a director of football would be appointed after Philippe Clement's appointment as manager, Bisgrove commented: "That's a conversation Philippe and I have had, it's one Philippe has had with the board.

"To provide some context, both the chairman and I and the board recognise the leadership and governance of the football department is absolutely essential to our short, medium and long-term success."
