James Tavernier opens up on Rangers Champions League heartache

James Tavernier believes Rangers shot themselves in the foot by conceding poor goals in their Champions League defeat to PSV.

Michael Beale's side suffered a heavy second-leg loss in Eindhoven to put an end to their hopes of reaching the group stage of Europe's elite competition.

The club will now head into the Europa League, and reflecting on last night's loss, Tavernier said: "It is obviously really raw and hard to take at the moment. We knew how much it meant to the fans and the club.

"Obviously the scoreline is really disappointing. It is something that we need to move quickly on with a really important game at the weekend.

"If you score three goals over two legs you hope that you will have a chance of getting through. We conceded too many goals.

"First half we know we should have done better. In the second half we tried to get on the ball a lot more but the goals we conceded were poor from ourselves."

Tavernier added hope in Eindhoven, but ultimately his goal was not enough. He added: "Conceding the goal right after mine put us on the backfoot.

"It is something that we quickly need to move on from. We are now in the Europa League.

"We have to concentrate on that, but the most important thing is the weekend.

"Before the international break, we have to dust ourselves down, reflect and really be at it.

"We obviously wanted to be in the Champions League. The feeling that we had last year was an unbelievable feeling. It wasn’t to be, and it’s disappointing the manner in which we got beat."
