James Tavernier delivers Alfredo Morelos Rangers red verdict as he opens up on Easter Road calls

James Tavernier has branded Alfredo Morelos' rush of blood against Hibs as 'stupid' as he delivered his verdict over Rangers' two red cards.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men dropped two points in the capital as they played out the final period of the game with nine men after John Lundstram and the Colombian hitman both were dismissed in the second half at Easter Road. Skipper Tavernier has described Lundstram's dismissal for his tackle on Martin Boyle as a 'simple trip' while he was more critical of Morelos' sending-off.

Rangers grabbed the advantage just before the break after Tav fired home from the penalty spot after Rocky Bushiri was penalised for a tug on Antonio Colak. Boyle was then on target early in the second half before Tom Lawrence headed home from Borna Barisic's cross to restore the Light Blues' advantage. But following two red cards from Willie Collum, the visitors had to play the final 15 minutes plus added time with nine men, but they were unable to hold on as Josh Campbell levelled deep into added-time to secure a point for Lee Johnson's men.

Tavernier was frustrated - just like his gaffer - at the two dropped points as Celtic grabbed an early lead in the title race following their win over Hearts to maintain their 100 per cent record but says all focus must now switch to the huge Champions League showdown with PSV in the Netherlands on Wednesday night.

Tav said: “Some of the decision-making in the game maybe cost us. We take the lead in the first half and created some chances. Second half we conceded a sloppy goal then put ourselves ahead only to see a decision to be made on us which we thought was a challenge in the first half.

“It’s a simple trip and he gets a red card which turns it in their favour. Alfredo’s one is stupid. He’s going to ask questions. We put ourselves on the back foot and I thought the character we have shown [was good].

“It’s obviously disappointing to lose a goal near the end. Especially when he [Campbell] slices the ball. If he’d got a good connection it probably goes straight to Jon McLaughlin.

“But we come away with a point. We defended the best we could but we have to put this behind us and focus on Wednesday. It’s obviously a massive game for us, for the club and for the fans. We want to bring Champions League football back to Ibrox. We will do everything possible to try to achieve that.”
