James Tarkowski sends touching message to Dwight McNeil after Everton brace

Everton centre-back James Tarkowski said he felt like a "proud father" watching Dwight McNeil make his first appearance for the club on Friday.

McNeil came off the bench in the second half to score twice, with his pinpoint shot from distance and close-range header adding to Dominic Calvert-Lewin's opener before half time.

The brace capped off a busy couple of days for McNeil, who only completed his transfer to the Toffees from Burnley on Thursday. The 22-year-old is Everton's third summer signing, with Ruben Vinagre also joining this week on loan.

Tarkowski was the first new face to come in this month and the centre-back followed the same path as McNeil - from Turf Moor to Goodison Park.

The defender turned in an impressive performance of his own on Friday to continue his encouraging pre-season, but took to social media to send a message to his new Blues team-mate.

"Loving every minute," Tarkowski posted. "Like a proud father when McNeil scored."

After the game, McNeil said that his familiarity with some members of the squad will make it easier to settle in.

"Obviously, it was nice to come on and score twice," he said. "It's a boost to have that confidence and belief from people around you. Now I'm just looking forward to the season, because we've got a massive game coming up against Chelsea.

"I feel like I'm settling in already - it helps when you know a couple of the lads already, but I'm happy to be here and excited to get going. I want to help the team as much as I possibly can."
