James Sands hopes to follow John Lundstram example and give Rangers fans something to sing about at Ibrox

John Lundstram

JAMES SANDS hopes he can follow John Lundstram's lead and give Rangers fans something to sing about at Ibrox.

The American has found starting spots hard to come by following his move from New York City on an 18-month loan deal during the January transfer window.

But he will be in Giovanni van Bronckhorst's squad for the Europa League final this week as Rangers aim to overcome Eintracht Frankfurt and write their names in the Ibrox history books.

The form of midfield compatriot Lundstram has been one of the impediments to Sands featuring in recent times as the Scouser has risen in prominence and influence.

Supporters have taken Lundstram to their hearts and he now has his own song - to the tune of Belinda Carlisle's 'Heaven is a place on earth' - that has become a terrace hit in the aftermath of the semi-final victory over RB Leipzig at Ibrox.

Sands said: "He is quite the player to learn from. Even from the bench, seeing how he handles the game, he is very calm and he has that switch when he is off the ball.

"I think he is a great example of how things take time as well. The first half of the season he wasn’t in the squad so much and now he has been the most important player.

"I think that is a good lesson for me to take away as well. He has got that switch that all the top players have. I certainly wouldn’t want to play against him.

"I would love to have a song. I have got to put in some performances before that. He has played it quite a lot!

"There are a couple of good ones. [Amad] Diallo has a good one as well. And Fashion (Sakala) of course."
