ALABAMA - Less than a year from arriving to São Paulo, it seems like James Rodríguez is looking for a new horizon as reports indicate the Colombian midfielder has asked to end the remainder of his contract with the Brazilian club. Last July, he signed a two-year deal that would have kept him with the popular Brazilian team until at least 2025.
The 32-year-old has managed to play in just 14 games for São Paulo since his arrival in July 2023, scoring one goal in the process. So far this season, he is yet to make an appearance and according to reports from GE Globo Esporte, Rodríguez is unhappy with the lack of minutes and is already looking for a new club, one that is closer to his family.
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2020, Rodríguez has played for four different clubs in three different continents, having brief spells with Everton, Qatar's Al-Rayyan, Greece's Olympiacos and now São Paulo. However, he has failed to impress at any of those clubs.
According to the same newspaper, James Rodríguez' daughter lives in Miami, so a move to the MLS could very well be among the Colombian's options to continue with his soccer career.
James rose to fame during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, a tournament where he finished as the top scorer with six goals.
He captivated millions of soccer fans thanks to his silky touch and his pompous moves all over the pitch. His amazing volley against Uruguay in the Round of 16 earned him the Puskas Award that year, with Uruguay's manager Óscar Tabárez labelling it as "one of the best goals ever scored in the history of the World Cup."
His stellar performance granted him a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. After a couple of promising seasons with the 'Merengues', Rodríguez progress was halted by frequent injuries, which led to Real Madrid loaning him to Bayern Munich, where he played for two seasons. A series of lackluster performances at the different clubs he's played at have driven him far from the spotlights he knew to shine under.
