The Denver Broncos are set to release quarterback Russell Wilson next week and the team has given him permission to speak with other clubs before that release becomes official.
As of Thursday morning, teams were not breaking down Wilson’s door.
“I spoke to multiple quarterback-needy teams today and all of them told me right now, guys, that Russell Wilson is not an option in terms of the things they’re looking at to fill their opening,” James Palmer reported on NFL Network on Thursday morning.
Either Palmer did not speak to the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Steelers changed their mind, because Pittsburgh is tentatively planning to meet with Wilson. The report of the Steelers’ interest emerged after Palmer’s report, and Palmer did note that things could change quickly.
“There’s still time, but as of right now, when I spoke to multiple teams that need a quarterback in this offseason, Russell Wilson is not one of the options [that] they are looking at,” Palmer said. “And it is wild that this is just two years removed from the trade that went down from Seattle to Denver.”
Wilson, 35, completed 66.4% of his passes for 3,070 yards with 26 touchdowns against eight interceptions in 15 games last season. NFL free agency will officially begin on March 13.
