James McCarthy suffers 'significant' Celtic blow as Ange Postecoglou delivers brutal update

Celtic are set to be without James McCarthy for an extended period after he suffered a big hamstring problem.

Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou has confirmed, according to PLZ, that he has been sidelined with a 'significant' blow to his muscle and is set to face a lengthy spell out. It's the latest midfield issue for Celtic, with captain Callum McGregor still recovering from a knee injury while Yosuke Ideguchi has faced various fitness problems since arriving at Parkhead earlier this year.

It's been a frustrating season or so for McCarthy after signing a long-term deal with the Hoops last season following a spell at Crystal Palace. He has struggled for regular appearances and this season has been reduced to cameo roles. But he's now set to be watching on from the stands with the World Cup break perhaps providing some additional time to recover. Celtic face Motherwell on Premiership duty at Fir Park tomorrow night.

Postecoglou said ahead of the game: "We need to get through the next two games nice and strong. We've had a really solid block of games.

"Champions League results aside our performances have been really strong through that and our league form's been excellent.

"My gut tells me it's probably a good time for the break because we've had just so much football in a short space of time. As much as the players have got through this period, there's always a tipping point - not just physically but mentally."
