James McAvoy insists Scottish Independence 'could be a fantastic thing' ahead of Glasgow return

James McAvoy has admitted Scottish Independence 'could be a fantastic thing' as he prepares for a return to the stage in Glasgow later this year.

The X-Men star, 42, opened up in a recent interview that he thinks independence could be the right move for Scotland, if it is done for the 'right reasons' and not because people dislike Boris Johnson.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, when asked if Scotland should aim for independence now, he said: “The fact that Boris and his company of people who enjoyed a drink while they were telling everybody not to isn’t necessarily something that will make me go, ‘Oh yes, Scottish independence’ – even though he is iconic of an educational and elitist class system that plays into Scottish independence massively.

"Independence could be a fantastic thing but it needs to be done for the right reasons. Don’t choose it because we don’t like Boris. Choose it because we want it. We can’t just define ourselves by our relationship with England. I’m sick of that.”

“I’ve been disappointed in our political system for decades. So the fact that it’s letting us down isn’t a massive shocker.”

When asked if he is more disappointed by the political system, rather than Boris Johnson he stated: “I think the system relentlessly produces people that disappoint.

“We’re not even asking that they be held to a higher standard – and they can’t even f****** do that.”

Despite having lived in London and America, the My Son actor still feels Scottish at heart.

McAvoy told the publication: “It’s where I was born, where I grew up. I’ve still got a place there and all my family there. I see myself as a Glaswegian and a Londoner – a Glaswegian Londoner.”

James McAvoy is due to take to the stage in Cyrano de Bergerac at the Theatre Royal between March 18-26.
