James Marsden recalls making a 'bad choice' during audition

James Marsden auditioned for the comedy show

James Marsden made a "bad choice" during his 'Saturday Night Live' audition.

The 51-year-old actor was overlooked for a role on the long-running comedy TV show, and James has now confessed to having some regrets about his audition choices.

During an appearance on 'Live with Kelly and Mark', James shared: "They did a nationwide talent search and a friend of mine in my drama class, or whatever, who I used to do these humorous sketches with, said, ‘Let’s go down and audition for it'.

"I think they made us do … It wasn’t even something like, ‘Create an interesting character,’ or whatever. It was like, ‘Do whatever silly thing you want to do.’ I don’t know why we chose to do this, but we clucked like chickens and just walked around each other ... Yeah, it was a bad choice."

James has enjoyed huge success in his career, and he's still keen to keep pushing his talents to the limit.

The Hollywood star told Vanity Fair magazine: "I want to be around. Longevity and diversity of roles. I’m not interested in just playing the same old guy.

"To be honest, I’m more Prince Edward [in 'Enchanted'] than I am Scott Summers in 'X-Men'."

James - who starred on '30 Rock', the hit TV sitcom, earlier in his career - has confessed to being cautious about the roles he agrees to take on.

He shared: "The only thing that gives me pause before signing on to a series is not really being able to read every script and know how it all ends.

"I find myself always inquiring and asking the showrunners about my character’s arc and the overall storyline, squeezing them for all the information I can get before I sign on."
