James Maddison teases Trent Alexander-Arnold over Tottenham-Liverpool replay saga

James Maddison couldn’t resist but tease England teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold over Liverpool’s replay saga with Tottenham when the pair joined up for national team duty.

A social media post by the Spurs midfielder showed them together at St. George’s Park after the squad joined up on Monday for matches against Australia and Italy.

With a picture of Alexander-Arnold gesticulating towards Maddison, he wrote on Instagram: “Still asking for a replay!”

The prospect of Liverpool requesting a replay of their defeat to Tottenham just over a week ago was floated by Jurgen Klopp, who spoke after a club statement threatened to “escalate” the controversy surrounding Luis Diaz’s wrongly-disallowed opening goal in north London.

The Reds went on to lose 2-1 courtesy of a last-minute Joel Matip own goal, while also seeing Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones dismissed for highly-contested red cards.

“There should have been solutions for it,” Liverpool boss Klopp said in the aftermath. “Not as manager of Liverpool but more as a football person I think the only outcome should be a replay.

“It probably won’t happen, the argument is that it would open the gate for everyone to ask for it. I think this is unprecedented.”

With the incident now passed, Maddison’s cheeky jibe at Alexander-Arnold shows there is no bad blood between the players as they focus on England duty.

It remains to be seen if it will be the Tottenham or Liverpool star who has the last laugh however, with Spurs leading the Premier League and three points clear of the Reds as the international break begins.
