James Maddison sends surprise chant request to Tottenham fans ahead of Manchester United clash

James Maddison has urged Tottenham fans to come up with a chant for him ahead of his competitive home debut.

The 26-year-old arrived in north London for £40m from Leicester earlier this summer and has made an immediate impact at the club, with Ange Postecoglou naming him as one of the vice-captains.

Maddison started in the club’s opening Premier League game of the season, away to Brentford last weekend, and had an assist with barely ten minutes on the clock as Cristian Romero headed home his free-kick. The midfielder had another before the break, setting up Emerson Royal’s strike in the 2-2 draw.

Spurs’ focus now shifts to Saturday’s match at home to Manchester United, as Postecoglou’s side look to show more of the attacking threat they displayed in a largely impressive showing at the Gtech Community Stadium.

While Maddison revealed his excitement at getting his first taste of competitive action for the club at home, the midfielder joked he feels he is missing out on the “heart-warming feeling” of a personalised chant.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he said in the club’s matchday programme, looking ahead to the United match.

“I can’t wait to experience a home Premier League matchday as a Tottenham player and perform for the fans and repay their faith and spirit that they bring by putting on good, attacking performances.

“A chant would be lovely though! No matter how many times you’re involved in football and how long you’ve been in the game, every single time you hear your name chanted and sung it’s a heart-warming feeling that you can’t really describe. So come on Spurs fans!”
