James Maddison's touching gesture helps 7-year-old cancer patient fulfil Disney dream

James Maddison has helped a brave child battling cancer achieve her dream of travelling to Disney World in Florida.

The Leicester City midfielder, 25, made a generous donation of £2,500 to help Violet, a seven-year-old suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, reach her goal of £20,000.

Violet, from Halesowen, has been fighting the disease since last April and she will be undergoing chemotherapy until 2023.

It is her dream to travel to Disney World, the world-famous resort near Orlando, and she has been fundraising for her trip since November.

Once the holiday is paid for, Violet's GoFundMe page states the leftover funds will be donated to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Maddison's donation is one of hundreds that have helped Violet smash her target, and many other sportspeople have contributed to the cause.

The England international posted on Twitter: "Have just donated the remaining £2500 to take Violet to her goal of £20,000. I hope that brave young girl can enjoy DisneyLand Florida and kick cancers backside."

Maddison's Three Lions teammate Tyrone Mings donated £2,000 while Robert Snodgrass was one of many West Bromwich Albion players to contribute alongside Dara O'Shea, Jordan Hugill and others.

In an update posted on the fundraising page on Monday, Violet can be seen holding a personalised Baggies shirt after she was invited to midfielder Jake Livermore's box for a VIP experience.

Her campaign has been gathering pace and capturing the hearts of the public in the West Midlands in recent weeks.

Maddison's intervention on Monday helped the fundraiser come to fruition, although he faced backlash on social media for make his donation public.

In response to one critic, who has since deleted their tweet, he wrote: "Or maybe I realise me tweeting about it as well means that my 329,000 followers also see violets battle against cancer and may also donate and raise more awareness for her cause…?"

Maddison was quickly vindicated as a £5,000 gift followed his own, meaning Violet has raised over £26,000 from over 600 separate donations as of mid-morning on Tuesday.

The Foxes ace further showed his class by inviting her to a game at the King Power Stadium, adding: "I don’t know if Violet or her family have social media but if she would ever like to come to a Leicester game as my guest, me and this fantastic club would welcome her with open arms."

Matthew Bennett, one of the organisers on the fundraising page, responded: "Wow, I take my hat off to you!

"Thank you so so much for your kind donation. It means the world to us! You are a true gentleman."
