James Maddison hit back at “insulting” suggestions he would not fit in with the England squad.

The Leicester playmaker continued his brilliant start to the season against Nottingham Forest on Monday, scoring twice and registering an assist in a resounding 4-0 win.

Maddison has now scored five Premier League goals despite a difficult opening few weeks for Brendan Rodgers’ side, leading to fresh calls to see him included in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Still, given the fact Southgate has not turned to the 25-year-old since his solitary cap in 2019, it seems unlikely Maddison will be recalled with so little before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount and Bukayo Saka all offer competition in attacking midfield areas, all of whom have featured heavily under Southgate.

When asked about suggestions his attitude has played a part in the fact he is continually overlooked, Maddison told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football: “I’ve never seen anything like that.

“But that’s almost questioning my personality and my professionalism which is obviously quite insulting.”
