James Gunn has shared new insights into his upcoming Superman reboot, shedding light on a specific scene. The DCU film, previously titled Superman: Legacy, is currently in production. Gunn disclosed to the Norwegian media outlet Svalbardposten that they have filmed the initial scenes of the Superman movie, featuring David Corenswet's Man of Steel seeking refuge in his 'ice fortress.'
Gunn explained, 'We have filmed the first scenes, where Superman escapes to the ice fortress. We wanted a location that exuded beauty and the essence of the Arctic. After considering various places globally, Svalbard stood out for us. The natural splendor and diverse landscape unique to Svalbard were key factors in our decision.'
A set photo from the sequence has been released, showcasing the snowy landscape mentioned by Gunn. This likely confirms the return of Superman's iconic Fortress of Solitude, a sanctuary for the superhero in times of need or solitude.
The Fortress of Solitude, traditionally situated at one of the poles, has been depicted in previous Superman adaptations, including Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie, Smallville, and Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.
During the week-long shoot at the location, onlookers observed the production, with Gunn expressing his approval of their interest. He noted, 'Having spectators is welcomed. It's different from individuals attempting to intrude on set for unauthorized photos.'
James Gunn's Superman reboot, the inaugural film in his and Peter Safran's DCU, will narrate 'Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian lineage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,' as per the official synopsis. The movie will portray Superman as a beacon of truth, justice, and American values, guided by compassion in a world that sometimes overlooks kindness.
Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, the film will introduce various DC characters alongside the iconic duo. The cast includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (Guy Gardner), and others.
The Superman reboot marks the genesis of the new DCU, with upcoming projects such as Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, and more slated to follow in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
Superman is scheduled for a theatrical release in the United States on July 11, 2025.
